Here’s a twist on a beach shoot.

We’ve all seen the usual “summery beach photoshoots.” Trust me, I love a summery beach photoshoot. I also love a fall, winter and spring photoshoot on the beach. The Jersey shore is ideal for all the beachy photoshoots with the neutral tones of the sand, surf and sky. BUT, when my client said she wanted to try something different at the beach- I was ALL IN. The concept was to be more lifestyle, surfer-ish and very colorful. We spent most of our time on the strip of LBI, NJ for this. There are tons of funky store fronts from Surf City all the way to Beach Haven so we were getting hit with non-stop inspiration. The image featured above, was like hitting the jackpot . A custom build surf BENCH and chair, that we could sit in?! Um that was a no brainer. The bright mural painted by a local artist sealed the deal on making this Jersey Shore beach photoshoot a dream come true for both my client and I.

New Jersey Family Photographer | Family Reunion on the beach photoshoot inspiration

Here is a family reunion beach photoshoot for you to check out. I photograph this family annually and every year the pictures have their own energy. The images are displayed in collages on my clients walls and it is so fun to go down the hallway and look at each shoot thats taken place over the years.

How do you make this type of shoot a success? It starts by coming up with a color palate that you share with the entire family. One year it might be shades of green and blue, another year it might be shades of pink and grey. The fact that every year is different is crucial.

The next thing is to keep things moving. Never stay still during the shoot. I start clicking when they begin walking down the path to the beach. It allows for me to get that variation we all love, the candid natural moments and the traditional portraits. We do all the combos to keep it fun; the kids, the cousins, the grandparents, etc. If the kids want to play, fine! Having no set parameters are what makes these shoots unique and special.

New Jersey Family Photography | Senior portrait session at the lake

Here is a little “lake life” senior portrait session idea for you. When we booked the shoot, my client said she’d love to stay close to home so the pictures reflected where her son grew up. Doing it n their backyard seemed like a no-brainer. The lake and the docks are the obvious places to use for a background- so we did. But I also wanted to have fun with the colorful kayaks that were being stored on the shoreline. When you head to your next photoshoot location, make sure you spend a few minutes walking around. See what catches your eye. You may not want to show the entire THING but little pops of color and texture can really elevate the images.

LBI Family Photographer | birthday gift

My last shoot from the LBI beach portraits couldn't have been better- or more special. This session was a birthday gift for their mom. A celebration of who she is as a person and the beautiful family she calls her own. I'm pretty sure some great memories were made, in between the laughter and smiles. Enjoy!

What a gorgeous night we had for this beach shoot. The warm evening sun transformed the sky in to a soft pastel canvas by the time we finished playing in the sand, and dipping our toes in the water. Truly magical!

My second shoot while in LBI was with my good friends and their family. We chose to switch it up this year, and headed to the light house for a change of scenery. As always, we had a wonderful time capturing great moments and memories!

The first day we arrived to LBI, we headed to the beach. My kids haven't been to the ocean since last summer, and my son definitely didn't remember being here last year. Watching the excitement they had at first sight was such a fun gift. And I'm so glad I brought the camera with me- because I captured some of my favorite pictures of them! A gift for the grandparents, who celebrated their wedding anniversary. I can't imagine a better present: everyone hanging out on the beach, making memories and taking pictures of three generation. Complete with champaign, I might add! I may have to copy this idea for my own family next year. What a great moment to look back on. So thankful to have photographed it!

LBI portrait day 3.

This shoot was a little different from what I'm used to, which is always a bit thrilling for me. The idea behind their portrait session was to capture who these boys really are; sports lovin' fools! Their passions are baseball (they're really good at it) and surfing (yep, they're cool). So we did a little of both and in the end, I think we succeeded in completing the goal. Memories made between two brothers, and images they'll cherish when they're older!

Ryan: a little super hero with a big personality. To say we had fun during this shoot is an understatement. Ryan came running right up to me (cape flowing behind him), and gave me an amazing welcome. The last time I saw him was 3 years ago- for his newborn shoot. So seeing him for this session was kind of a big deal, plus I photographed his parents wedding a few years back. I'm so excited to share this preview with you. It was a magical night!
